1746 born in Satory, Versailles, France, where his father managed a farm on the royal estate
1769 marries Cécile Claye
1770 Cécile dies, shortly after giving birth to François André Michaux
missions (botanical?) to England, Auvergne, the Pyrenées, and Persia
1785 travels to North America with François André, to make an extended study of its trees and shrubs, with a view to which might do best in the royal gardens; buys a plantation in Charleston, South Carolina, as a base of operations; explores the Carolina mountains
1786 continues exploring in Florida
more forays into the Appalachians and Bahamas
1789 the French Revolution interrupts his flow of funds; he decides not to return home
1792 starts a tremendous journey, overland from Charleston to Quebec and North from there almost to Hudson Bay; is the first to note the point of transition between the Northern forests and the tundra
1801 expedition to Madagascar
