Biography

The first really big American expert on mosses. Like most non-mycologists, he has an informative entry in the Encyclopedia Britannica.
Gray says that Hypnum sullivantiae (Schimper) is named after the second Mrs. Sullivant (out of a total of three), Eliza, who was also a substantive bryologist. She died of cholera in 1850 (or 1851).
