Terms discussed: aerobe (pl. aerobes), anaerobe (pl. anaerobes)
An aerobic organism requires a supply of free oxygen for its metabolism; an anaerobic one does not. Aerobiotic and anaerobiotic are 19th century versions of the same terms. An aerobe is an aerobic organism, and an anaerobic organism is an anaerobe.
