In mycological terminology, "hypo-" means "under", and "sub-" means "not quite", or "a little bit." Thus, if it were a mycological term, "submarine" would indicate a fungus that could survive even if dipped in the ocean once in a while. Subdecurrent gills are those that only extend down the stem a very little way, a subtomentose cap is verrry faintly fuzzy, and hypogeous fungi are those which grow underground.
