1887 studies botany at Harvard

1890 earns PhD

1891 assistant at Yale

1895 - 1934 professor of botany at the university of california at Berkeley

1899 collecting expedition to Alaska

1899 collecting journey around the world

1922 collecting expedition to Tahiti

1924 collecting expedition to Hawaii

1926 - 1927 collecting journey around the world

1929 collecting expedition to Java

Setchell was primarily an algologist and plant geographer, but he had a secondary interest in hypogeous fungi. Presumably that's how he met Lloyd and got his picture taken.
