Biography

1855     drops out of high school, works as a volunteer in the Botanical Garden in Kiel

1864 - 1874     works in the post office in various places in northern Germany

1874     appointed assistant at the botanical garden in Kiel

1880     appointed scientific assistant at the botanical museum in Kiel

1883     appointed scientific assistant at the botanical museum in Berlin

1890     appointed assistant curator

1891     appointed curator

1893     becomes editor of the journal Hedwigia

1902     appointed Royal Professor

1905     retires as editor of Hedwigia

I read somewhere (probably Lloyd) that Hennings got into mycology by accident: his position was really just botany in general, and he was more of an administrator than a scientist; but they were short a mycologist so he ended up writing up some collections himself, and just took off from there.
