Theodor did a lot of research on treeswas the father of Robert Hartig, who discovered the Hartig net. His big contribution is convincing everyone else of the functional difference between the big thick roots that anchor a tree and the fine ones that actually absorb nutrients. This paved the way for acceptance of mycorrhizae.
