1850 born in Warsaw

1869 - 1870 studies in Jena

1870 - 1872 studies in Halle

1872 - 1873 studies in Strassburg, where he earns his PhD and is de Bary's assistant

1876 appointed lecturer at the university of Krakow

1878 promoted to associate professor

1881 promoted to full professor and director of the botanical gardens

1912 retires

Rostafinski was one of de Bary's outstanding students, and is the first major author on the Myxomycetes. We still follow his classification system for them, which is more (much, much more) than can be said for the fungal taxonomy of the period.

In researching Rostafinski on the web, I came across a site dedicated to bios of Polish intellectuals, on the domain NewPoland.com. Their entry for Rostafinski was:

Rostafinski, Jozef (1850-1928), cytologist. He discovered the phenomenon of merogony developement of the egg, or fragment of it, without the nucleus and artificially inseminate and myxomycete taxonomy.

which just goes to show that this website is better than some.
