Fuckel seems to have been a smart one: after working as an apothecary from 1836-1852, he somehow came into possession of a vinyard, lived off of that, and spent the rest of his life concentrating on fungi. His Fungi rhenani exsiccati contains many of the type species for the taxa that he declared. He also handled the fungi brought back by the second German expedition to the North Pole (1860-70).
