Biography

taught privately how to be an apothecary by his father, chemistry by Klaproth, and botany by Gleditsch.

goes to study at the apothecary school in Langensalza, Germany

1785     passes exams to become an apothecary, goes to Halle and studies medicine

1789     earns MD, practices in Berlin

1798     appointed professor of natural history at the royal college of medical surgeons (stay away from the non-medical kind!)

shortly before his death, appointed professor for botany at the newly founded (1810) university of Berlin
